Common Makeup Myths Busted

As beginners, makeup users find ways to improve their skills and look “on fleek”. We experiment with different trends, try to recreate looks and end up looking a bit like the Joker. That’s okay though, practice is EVERYTHING in makeup. The internet is full of tips and tricks for help. However, the accuracy of them are slightly questionable. Here are 10 of the most commonly known myths with their explanations and suggestions.

Myth #1

“Pumping the mascara wand helps you get the right amount of product.”

The pumping action pushes air into the tube, which in turn makes the mascara dry out faster.

Instead, place the Mascara tube in a glass of warm water for clump-less application.

Myth #2

“Apply your concealer before foundation”

Applying concealer before foundation makes the face look cakey, and wastes product.

Instead, apply foundation all over the face and then gently dab concealer to further cover up any blemishes or dark circles.

Myth #3

“Organic makeup brands are safer”

The ingredients used in organic makeup can very easily cause rashes and bad reactions.

Check the ingredients before purchasing any organic product. Personally, I believe normal makeup brands are always a safer bet.

Myth #4

“Branded products are always better than drugstore ones”

This is not always the case. Just because branded products cost more doesn’t necessarily mean they are better in quality!

Myth #5

“Cosmetics do not expire”

All makeup products have an expiration date. Using expired makeup can be very harmful for your skin and it is not recommended AT ALL.

The image above shows the average lifespan of some makeup products. Check for the expiration date on your makeup or ask the store for it.

Myth #6

“Curl your eyelashes after applying mascara and eyeliner.”

Fact: Curling your lashes after applying eyeliner not only makes your lashes look clumpy, but can also erase parts of your liner.

Unless smudgy, dotted eyeliner and spider lashes are your go-to looks, I suggest curling the lashes, applying eyeliner and lastly finishing off with mascara.

Myth #7

“Overlining lips makes them look bigger”

Fact: This may look good on camera, but you may look a little bit like Miranda Sings if you do it in person.

I personally don’t recommend lining the lips unless it’s paired with a matte lipstick.

Myth #8

“Black eyeliner on the waterline makes the eyes look bigger.”

Fact: If you want your eyes to look bigger, black eyeliner will not give you the desired effect.

Try applying a white or nude eyeliner in the lash line and then smoking out some black eyeliner below the waterline.

Myth #9

“Makeup causes acne and breakouts”

Fact: Makeup does not cause acne or breakouts, having bad hygiene does.

As long as you remove it every night, it shouldn’t be a problem!

Myth #10

“There’s no need to wash your makeup brushes if you’re the only one using them”

Fact: Using dirty brushes is bad for the skin as the residue of the earlier makeup and dust particles can cause breakouts.

Wash your brushes and sponges regularly by leaving them in soapy water overnight and rinsing them with cold water.
